How to Build a Pinewood Derby Car
Building a Pinewood Derby car for Cub Scouts can be a fun and educational project for both kids and adults. Here is a step-by-step guide for building a car using handtools and a Pinewood Derby car kit:
Gather materials: You will need a Pinewood Derby car kit, sandpaper, a saw, a file, glue, paint or markers, and any optional additional decorations.
Draw a Design: Use a piece of paper to sketch a design or use template.
Cut the block: Cut the Pinewood block with a saw based on your design.
Shape the car: Use sandpaper and a file to shape the car. You can use a pattern as a guide or come up with your own design.
Sand the block: Sand down any rough edges and surfaces to create a smooth finish.
Add weights: If desired, add weights to the car to make it heavier and improve its performance. You can use metal weights or other materials approved by the Pinewood Derby rules. The car should be no more than 5 oz.
Paint and decorate: Paint or decorate the car with markers to make it look as cool as possible. You can also add additional decorations using glue.
Install wheels: Attach the wheels to the axles and nail them in place. Make sure the wheels are straight and spin smoothly. You may apply graphite to the axles to help with better movement.
Test and refine: Test the car on a track to see how it performs. Make any necessary adjustments to improve its speed and handling.
Good luck and have fun building your Pinewood Derby car!
